Mallard Duck in Flight - Intarsia
MTCowpoke22 and 7 others reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I adapted a photo of a Mallard Duck in Flight to create an 11 ¼” x 10 ¼” Intarsia pattern. Wood used: Aspen, Basswood, Orange Osage, Roasted Birch, Sapele, Yellowheart, and Wenge. Very accurate cutting is needed to get a good fit of the many small parts, especially in the wings. To enhance the piece, I used dye to color Aspen for the Green and Blue areas. For my version I also added some dark shading to match the image using an Airbrush. Backer is 1/8” thick BB Ply and the completed Assembly was protected with multiple coats of a Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish. Original Photo. My version! Comments and critiques welcome. I will post the pattern in Pattern Exchange.8 points -

Just finished this. It is to go with a previous one I did some time ago. I have two more I am going to try eventually. I tried some new things this time. I cut the white and removed the pattern from those pieces but left the pattern on the rest of the picture. Sprayed the white pieces. Last time, I hand-painted them. This worked well and was much easier and faster.4 points -
Wedding Rings Special Request
MTCowpoke22 and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
I know I posted these many times, but we have new members. Another "Wedding Rings" completed project. The designer is unknown. I used 1/2" Cherry. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades and Pegas #1 MGT blades on the letters and numbers. Finished with two coats spray Shellac and sanding between coats. Comments welcome.3 points -

I appreciate your kind words but I still have no idea how to finish what I make. In my estimation Dave Monk is the person I would love to have as my neighbor. His work is second to none. I could learn so much from him and I know he would be happy to tutor me. Thanks again.1 point -

@Scrappile Paul, really nice job on that piece. I'm thinking that you should do a complete jazz band. Can't wait to see the "SCRAPPERSs" jazz band. Thank for sharing. Rick1 point -
I'm following along - my daughter is getting married in a few months and I've been thinking about making a ring box for whomever is going to carry and present the wedding rings at the ceremony( maybe ). She hasn't decided last I knew if she was having a flower girl and/or ring bearer. Kevin, keep me in mind if you find any great plans for any.1 point

Start with Google, search Banksy. you'll see many articles about Banksy and his works. they give his birthplace, wifes name etc. they list art shows with his works and values. It isn't all google info. that's just a starting point. there are articles by the BBC, Britannica, of course wikipedia and many more. I think perhaps they stay away from some info because the unknown is one of the things that makes him so compelling. I have many favorites but one of my favs is the little girl performing CPR on a peace dove. I also like his gangster rats and monkey art.1 point -

Ring Box?
JTTHECLOCKMAN reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I made some slide top ones years ago that I think may have been Steve Good's design.. basically just angle cut the top and two sides to glue onto the box so they fit snug but not too snug or too loose to allow for movement of the wood. I did a couple where the inside was hollowed out with just a forstner bit too. If I used the CNC the heart shape would be real easy to just cut the foam insert and make a perfect fit to the box.1 point -
True Intarsia uses the natural color of various wood to create the Art. Green and Blue are not readily available as natural wood colors. As I stated in my post, I dyed Aspen ( avery White Wood) the blue and geen areas. All others parts of the Duck are the natural wood color, although I did add the dark shading/shadow by applying a very thin coat of Acrylic Paint with my Air Brush. And yes, I do purchase many various pieces of wood to get the many various colors needed to do Intarsia. Not an inexspensive hobby.1 point

Ring Box?
JackJones reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
What I have done in the past was take some felt of color you want to use. Cut it to basic size to fit box but make it long. Now roll it up from both sides till they meet in the middle. Now you can trim some more to fit in the box with scissors. The fold is where the ring goes. Now you would want to adhere it to bottom of the box so it does not get pulled out. The toughest part I found was the shape of the box was a heart shape. So trimming was a little trickier. That was the basic way I did ring boxes because they were smaller. Now I have done other boxes using different methods too. I use foam under the felt and cut the foam and then wrap with felt making sure to form the felt into the crevices. Some boxes I just left it like a pillow in there. I do not have photos of ring boxes but maybe a photo or 2 of the other type boxes. Probably not because again I was not taking photos with a digital camera back then. Now some photos I converted but will see if I did any of those. I know I have one of the pool table pen box I did. Maybe the idea can be used for your situation and do not know why not. Sorry the photos are not that good in showing things and I could not find the one with the pool table and no pen in it but you get the idea. Just carve the foam and cover with felt. The same with the trinket boxes. I also did some religious cross boxes that I used same idea with felt but again those photos are on film only. I keep saying one day I will transfer alot of those but it would take some time. The roll of the felt was used on smaller ring boxes.1 point -
Two stacks of five 1/8" BB plywood. Pieces of BB pinned with 1/2" pins at the corners from each direction, no tape. The blanks held together well, no shifting, no problems. FD Polar #1 blades for the interior cuts, #3 for the outside. This took a little longer than normal because of the short stroke on the Hegner, but I really like the control I get using it. The instructions called for 2/0 blades but the #1's worked just fine. Pattern from SSWC #80 Fall 2020.1 point

My year (2024) has been rather busy. This was the first year I really got involved in vendor shows and attended a little less than a dozen. As most others have experienced, some shows I did well, and others were a flop. But something I enjoy more is getting commissions from customers who come up and seen my work. The black lab (pattern is in Village Library) I created for a lady who had a vendor booth set up across from mine at one of the shows. She had recently lost a black lab and unfortunately didn't have any pictures. I was able to find a picture, create a pattern and make the cut. She was extremely pleased and said the piece did look like her dog. The Silky belonged to a lady that is in a dog training club with my wife. This was a champion dog in both conformation (Best In Show) and obedience training. I made the pattern from a picture she had and if I remember correctly, the pattern has around 650 cuts. It was tricky, but a lot of fun to cut. The heart was added at the request of my wife. Unfortunately, the dog had passed just before I got the commission. The two cowboy pieces are patterns by Jim Blume. I love his patterns and have cut many of them over the past couple years. The most challenging was the six team stagecoach going through water. That piece had a few cuts short of being 1500. These pieces didn't have near that many, but they were challenging because of the delicate places with small bridges. I guess the reason I like Jim's patterns is because they challenge me. The last piece I cut for a local restaurant chain. Obviously, it is a Mexican restaurant, and I cut it at the request of one of the wait staff. When I finished it and brought it to them, the manager seen it and had a fit. (Good fit.) He had to hang it up right away. The young lady that asked me to do the cut was pleased and had intended to hang the piece in the restaurant anyway. I felt kind of bad for her, so I cut one of the 3D bird houses and gave it to her once they had their Christmas tree up. She did hang it on the tree but once they took it down, she kept it and hung it in her car.1 point
