Mallard Duck in Flight - Intarsia
MTCowpoke22 reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I adapted a photo of a Mallard Duck in Flight to create an 11 ¼” x 10 ¼” Intarsia pattern. Wood used: Aspen, Basswood, Orange Osage, Roasted Birch, Sapele, Yellowheart, and Wenge. Very accurate cutting is needed to get a good fit of the many small parts, especially in the wings. To enhance the piece, I used dye to color Aspen for the Green and Blue areas. For my version I also added some dark shading to match the image using an Airbrush. Backer is 1/8” thick BB Ply and the completed Assembly was protected with multiple coats of a Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish. Original Photo. My version! Comments and critiques welcome. I will post the pattern in Pattern Exchange.1 point -

A custom request. The pattern is by Gayle at the Scroll Saw Cafe. I used 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood stacked two high 12" x 12". Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #0 Spiral blades. The finish is three coats Spray Lacquer Clear Satin with a light sanding between coats. Of course, framed at ArtCrafters. Comments welcome.1 point -

Christmas is over and we start a new year. Whenever January rolls around, I often reflect on the previous year. I enjoy looking back at the memories, accomplishments, and projects that made the past year special. For this month's challenge, think about your favorite scroll saw projects from last year and share it with us. What made it stand out? Was it a meaningful gift, or did it have a special purpose? I always love hearing the stories behind each project. I’m excited to see your favorites!1 point

Another One for my Jazz collection
MTCowpoke22 reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Just finished this. It is to go with a previous one I did some time ago. I have two more I am going to try eventually. I tried some new things this time. I cut the white and removed the pattern from those pieces but left the pattern on the rest of the picture. Sprayed the white pieces. Last time, I hand-painted them. This worked well and was much easier and faster.1 point -
Love it. Excellent work. Marg1 point

Love it. I also love sea glass but I never seen to have time to get down to the beach and this is no time to go at the moment, too many people down here on holiday. But I will drag Terry along one day soon. Marg1 point

Leopard cut in Bamboo
wombatie reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Bamboo is a material that I love for cutting when I can get it. I loved this Leopard pattern, of which I can not remember who designed it but I would love to that the author of it for making it available. The bamboo is about 3/8 thick and cuts very nicely with no fuzzies from drilling of cutting. I cut it with a #1 Pegas spiral blade because it goes so much quicker and a lot easier to do than a straight blade. I sprayed it with 3 layers of Deft semi gloss. I am constantly looking for somewhere to purchase the Bamboo wood at the size and thickness I want to use. It seems to be a little difficult to find around Phoenix but I know it has to be here waiting for me to make a purchase. I used a 1/4 inch BB Ply for the backer board. I cut this a couple of weeks ago but have not gotten around to taking a photo and posting it until now. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Angel Fish, a Steve Bundred pattern, is the January 2025 FB PAM. The two-part vertically stacked assembly measures 10 ½” x 10”. Wood used were Padauk, Yellowheart and Purpleheart along with 1/8” BB Ply backers and some scrap Pine shim blocks. Since I did not have the correct size Fostner bits and I do not own any plug cutters, the round eye details were difficult to do, so I cheated and used black paint for the centers. The completed assembly was protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish spray. I started this project on January 1, but because the temperatures here in Central Florida have been so cool this month, and my little heater in my shop just can’t keep up, daily shop time has been very limited. Also, the three woods used were all very hard, especially the Purpleheart, and the cutting was very, very slow. I dulled and/or broke way too many Pegas #3 MGT-R blades cutting this project. Comments and Critiques always welcome.1 point

A friend of my wife's just went through a divorce. Father is a jerk. Anyway, she has a little son who had a rough start in life and had many health issues, but at almost three, he is doing really well. His grandfather does not live close by and really does not show a lot of interest in having a grandson. So, good for me, I have another little one I can make things for. His mother said she took him to a Monster Truck show a while back. NOW, all he talks about are the Monster Trucks. So, I just finished the first of what I hope to be several toys. I am going to have a great time and use up a bunch of scrap wood.1 point

I have lots of surrogate grand kids. Love them all. He will certainly love his new truck. Spread the love Paul. Marg1 point

Hello
wombatie reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Well, it doesn't really belong here except it is a finished project. Don't remember exactly where the artwork came from, but is was free. This 7"x7" using the craft panels from KJP Select and stack cut 2. Mirror finish is a peel & stick roll on masonite backer. Used some older, heavy-duty spray, thinking it would be easier to apply evenly, with no squeeze out. Well.....it came out very stringy. Tried cleaning it up with the sanding mop. That exploded!!!! Down to one! Cleaned it up a bit. Sprayed with 3m77. Not a great hold, but no squeeze out. There are still blobs of the bad glue so this one will be hung in the workshop instead of being sold. This is a giraffe looking down and backwards at you!1 point -

That's a bummer. Hope you have better luck next time. I looks good in the photo. Marg1 point -
I was just browsing Hegner's website. Seems that after 50 years in Delaware, they've moved operations to Kentucky. Might have something to do with the ads.1 point

Ring Box?
JTTHECLOCKMAN reacted to CharleyL for a topic
Look in your local Blue or Orange big box store, in the masonry area, for "Backer Rod" of the diameter that you need. It's a long round strip of foam plastic insulation in a poly bag that's used to fill expansion joints in masonry building walls, and it is available in many diameters. I cut these into strips of the length needed, glue a piece of the velvet to them to cover their surface (hot glue gun glue), and then hot glue them into the jewelry box side by side. The rings are then held in rows in the slots between these rods. Charley1 point -

I appreciate your kind words but I still have no idea how to finish what I make. In my estimation Dave Monk is the person I would love to have as my neighbor. His work is second to none. I could learn so much from him and I know he would be happy to tutor me. Thanks again.1 point -
Nah, you don't want to do that.1 point

Wedding Rings Special Request

I know I posted these many times, but we have new members. Another "Wedding Rings" completed project. The designer is unknown. I used 1/2" Cherry. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades and Pegas #1 MGT blades on the letters and numbers. Finished with two coats spray Shellac and sanding between coats. Comments welcome.1 point -

You are correct. You cannot copy & sell a pattern. Anything you make you can sell or give away the product. Generally though, credit should be given to the pattern designer.1 point -
Two stacks of five 1/8" BB plywood. Pieces of BB pinned with 1/2" pins at the corners from each direction, no tape. The blanks held together well, no shifting, no problems. FD Polar #1 blades for the interior cuts, #3 for the outside. This took a little longer than normal because of the short stroke on the Hegner, but I really like the control I get using it. The instructions called for 2/0 blades but the #1's worked just fine. Pattern from SSWC #80 Fall 2020.1 point

Since I made a few patterns of dog photos in the 'pattern request' thread, I hereby present to you how this style of pattern looks like in real life. This is my dog Gina. 35 x 47 cm, backer board 4mm, Gina 4mm, 'cheap' DIY store ply, done with a hand held fretsaw with a #1 blade. This was a lot of work, but I think it looks way better than a pattern made of simple lines.1 point

Medieval Knight & Dragon, Scroll Saw Project Video

My year (2024) has been rather busy. This was the first year I really got involved in vendor shows and attended a little less than a dozen. As most others have experienced, some shows I did well, and others were a flop. But something I enjoy more is getting commissions from customers who come up and seen my work. The black lab (pattern is in Village Library) I created for a lady who had a vendor booth set up across from mine at one of the shows. She had recently lost a black lab and unfortunately didn't have any pictures. I was able to find a picture, create a pattern and make the cut. She was extremely pleased and said the piece did look like her dog. The Silky belonged to a lady that is in a dog training club with my wife. This was a champion dog in both conformation (Best In Show) and obedience training. I made the pattern from a picture she had and if I remember correctly, the pattern has around 650 cuts. It was tricky, but a lot of fun to cut. The heart was added at the request of my wife. Unfortunately, the dog had passed just before I got the commission. The two cowboy pieces are patterns by Jim Blume. I love his patterns and have cut many of them over the past couple years. The most challenging was the six team stagecoach going through water. That piece had a few cuts short of being 1500. These pieces didn't have near that many, but they were challenging because of the delicate places with small bridges. I guess the reason I like Jim's patterns is because they challenge me. The last piece I cut for a local restaurant chain. Obviously, it is a Mexican restaurant, and I cut it at the request of one of the wait staff. When I finished it and brought it to them, the manager seen it and had a fit. (Good fit.) He had to hang it up right away. The young lady that asked me to do the cut was pleased and had intended to hang the piece in the restaurant anyway. I felt kind of bad for her, so I cut one of the 3D bird houses and gave it to her once they had their Christmas tree up. She did hang it on the tree but once they took it down, she kept it and hung it in her car.1 point

Thanks, Marie. Yes. First I just did the scalloped circle and sea turtle. I thought of the dolphins around 8PM and I’m kind of obsessive compulsive so I went out to the shop and added them before bedtime. The turtle and dolphins were images I found on Google.1 point

The one project that was special for me is finding I can get two or three images from one pattern, depending on how you cut your pattern. The rabbit was my first experiment and I was really pleased with it. The girl with the watering can and the witch were two others that worked out well. I have this thing about wasting wood and this works well for me.1 point

2024 Year In Review - Scroll Saw Challenge

Last year I started, in earnest, my Intarsia journey. These are a couple that I was particularly proud of. The Pelican was a pattern by JGR and one of the PAM projects. I found out I won that month a few days before Judy passed. The duck was a custom design, by me, for my baby sister's 60th birthday. The bouys and koi just "spoke" to me. The hummingbird was a prize from Steven Shears. He said it was an unpublished pattern and I was the first to cut it.1 point -

Some of my favorites from last year. John Wick is always a fun pattern to cut. The two lovers is one I'd wanted to do for a long time, and I had been wondering what to do with a small scrap of live-edge. And The Shadow...move over, Batman, the original brooding detective is back! The Shadow knows...1 point -
