I used Peruvian walnut for the inlay. The light wood is soft maple. The dowels are American walnut.

  2. I received the pen blanks from Cousineau yesterday and had to cut some little birds. I cut a 4 little birds from the Spectraply. I received different color 20 pieces 3/4” x 3/4” x 5”, enough to make 4 birds from each piece. This makes the cost 25 cents per bird. Oh, what fun.

    Celtic Cross

I’ve enjoyed making some simple things lately. My sister in law wanted a Celtic Cross. I found an outline I liked online to use as a pattern. I stack cut two 3/8” oak crosses, then removed the circle from the top one, routed it then glued them together

  4. Cut from 1/2 inch cherry with the frame made out of ash . i love my scroll saw but the other tool I find really handy is my drum sander. I ran this project thru my Supermax drum sander probably about 10 times and it did not break a whisker or a blade of grass. In a honest moment I will tell you there is a couple blades of grass missing but that would be labeled scroll saw operator error

  5. I think I liked it better without the frame.

  6. Denny - What a great idea. I checked my stock and I have some small pieces left over from making pens. ================================== Most penturning sites have them. Make awesome pens. In Canada, I have got them from Woodchuckers or William Woodwrite In the USA, Penn State Industry have a cool assortment. https://www.pennstateind.com/store/WXSY99.html

  7. Ok, this is not for the FB February/March PAM, but it is an Umbrella Girl anyhow. I found this slightly risk-kay, un-titled, different, Stain Glass pattern that I’m calling ‘Umbrella Girl Embarrassing Moment’. I adapted the Stain Glass pattern for Intarsia, creating a nominal 11” x 16” pattern which includes the fixed frame. Wood used: Aspen, Alder, Blue Pine, Orange Osage, Poplar, Roasted Birch, Sapele, and Walnut (Frame). My supply of Blue Pine is not Blue at all, but it’s areas of near Whites, Pinks and Grays made a decent sky while I found a fairly Geen piece of Poplar for the water. The wood used for the beach has a defect and the white Aspen for the lower part of the dress has dark areas, enhanced by the finish, that were not removable by sanding. Both, much more noticeable in the photo than when viewed hanging on the wall. Finish is multiple coats of rattle can Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish spray. Comments and critiques are allways welcome.

    Wood Glue Prices

I am working on an outdoor project that requires waterproof glue. I haven't bought glue for several years and was surprised at how much the price has increased. I paid $10 for the smallest bottle they had.

    Why not cardboard?

I know I throw away a lot of good flat cardboard boxes. Amazon and Chewy come to mind. Why not cut the good flat sides from these boxes and use them for backer boards when cutting BB plywood? I would think it might work well and save a lot of good wood for other things. I myself don't do that many projects like that but I do have one coming up soon where I will be stack-cutting some 1/8 in pieces. It would be such a shame to waste some good wood as backers. What say you all?

    Wood Glue Prices

Something that has always puzzled me is an employer (or Social Security) will give employees or retirees a Cost of Living allowance of 2 or 3% but the statistics show the actual cost of living went up 18 to 20%. We are actually going in the hole.

  14. This is my first posting in quite a while - except for a couple projects here and there I really haven't been sitting at the scrollsaw a whole lot - my bad .... This project was one that has a bit of meaning so it was important to "get it right". "Minnie" is a 17 year old Daschshund and, despite showing her age, remains an enthusiastic Packers fan (along with her "Mom"). Minnie has been cut into Cherry and framed by Butternut (stained with red chestnut). The backing is 1/8 inch Baltic Birch stained black. Many thanks to yamatetsu, of this forum, for generously contributing the pattern making skills that made the project possible. Thanks again, Jay

    Wood Glue Prices

Everything has gone up in price over the past few years, and then they increased the cost of electricity. My property tax went up 20%. Everything went up but my income.

  23. I cut 1/4 inch BB all the time as single or stacked 2 at a time. (have done 5 - 1/8 BB too) I use FD-UR #3 mostly. BB is hard on blades as they dull quickly due to the glue. I have used Pegus MGT #3 and they work well too but they are more aggressive and the cut is not as clean.

It is plywood. You are contending with multiple layers of wood that when are glued together are rotated 90 degrees from each other so the grain pattern makes it tough. Plus cutting into adhesives is not easy on the blades. Stacking 1/4" just adds to it. Just the nature of the beast. remember BB plywood has even more layers than regular plywood for stability.

    Umbrella Girl #7 - Intarsia

The FB February/March PAM is a series of eight Umbrella Girl patterns provided by Bob Beaupre. Entries can be one or more of the eight. You can find many finished versions Umbrella Girl Intarsia on Pinterest and I happen to run across a version of Number 7 by a Mehmet Biçer. Although the subject is not particularly interesting to me, after seeing Mehmet’s version I decided I would make only one and I also chose to do number 7. I used the photo his as guide for my presentation. I resized the patten slightly to fit a 9 3/4” x 11 3/4’ oval. Wood I used: Aspen, Basswood, Blue Pine (5/8” thick for Oval), Cherry, Mahogany, Purpleheart, Wenge, and Yellowheart. The project was an easy cut but cutting the hat gave me fits (pun intended) during fit-up. That damn hard Purpleheart…you get my drift! The finish is multiple coats of rattle can spray Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish. This is the image of the biece by Mehmet. Comments and critiques are always welcome.

  32. First of all, terrific work Dick. Second try Googling Bamboo ply wood in your area. Third you can usually find some cheap chopping boards in cheap stores. Marg
