  1. Temps finally came up the last couple of days, so I could get back into the workshop. Today I took a day off from work so I did a quick "Bread Board" project today, made out of Yellow Heart. Pattern by Charles Hand

I used Peruvian walnut for the inlay. The light wood is soft maple. The dowels are American walnut.

  3. Four more Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments. The first three birdhouses are made with Ash. The fourth is Cherry. All the little birds are made from Spectraply. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 and #6 Super Skip blades. Dipped in diluted Shellac two times with a light sanding with the Mac Mop between coats. Comments welcome.

    Why not cardboard?

@OCtoolguy Ray, I had the opportunity to cut another portrait out of 1/8” ply today but I only had one frame left for that particular size so I didn’t stack cut it. I still wanted to have a thicker stack for blade control but didn’t want to waste a good piece of ply, so I covered the ply with shelf liner on both sides. Glued the pattern to one side and glued the cereal box cardboard to the other. This kept the cardboard in good contact over the whole piece. After cutting the portrait both the pattern and the cardboard peeled off cleanly and there were zero fuzzies on the back side of the ply. It was so clean I couldn’t tell the front from the back! I guess your idea worked

Thank you. It’s a piece of oak from an old pallet. I’ve bought hundreds of dollars worth of wood. The prettiest ones with the most character are usually free.

  9. I don't have many pics of all the pvc animals I've made but here's a couple I found party flamingos were well liked and the see saw flamingos were funny the giraffe was one 6 inch pipe 10 feet and it cost 60 bucks during pandemic I'm sure it's over a 100 now used to get a lot of horns beeping when I was Driving around with the birds in backseat as I delivered them the momma and baby ducks were very popular and I made many sets for friends and family and even sent patterns to several other woodworkers to make for their gardens i taught 3 people how to make pvc birds not that it was a difficult thing but they were clueless and now make beautiful birds and one guy sells them

  11. I'm waiting on pink paint for the pvc flamingos these will be the approximate 186 of them I've made since 2019 I gave away anonymously 120 of them in all colors to nurses and other hospital workers in my town and some to people who lived close enough as a thankyou during pandemic for their service I'm still struggling with remnants of the flu so I can't get myself into full mode yet this is the last therapy dog the school had and I made 6 planters that sold within an hour when she put them up for sale fred is retired now and I'm hoping he's enjoying Florida

  12. I stopped at 24 because I have other items to include Those 24 sets i made a flamboyance(had to look up what a group of flamingos are called) of pvc flamingos that she will get 50 bucks each I had 2 Elmo birdhouses that were not picked up after people left deposit so I'm sure they will sell as soon as they are out out and the school has a new therapy dog so I'm going to make only 2 planters that hopefully resemble the new doggie heres the dog and the pattern I'll tweak to get it close it will be made with 2x8 s and 2x4 s and paint

    Wood Glue Prices

Everything has gone up in price over the past few years, and then they increased the cost of electricity. My property tax went up 20%. Everything went up but my income.

  16. For my daughters next fundraiser at school I'm making a load of these stick figure pieces ive made 100's of them in the past mostly with the bandsaw still need sanding and some need floppy ears to be attached last years fundraiser was a huge success with the birdhouses and feeders she sold every unit I hope she sells a lot of them to staff as I told her I can make as many as she needs for the actual sale normally I trace them onto wood but this time I glued paper pattern so everyone of them is same to mix and match species Spanish cedar walnut poplar so far will use sapele and cherry as I move along she said 36 sets would be fine as I'm making her some other things like planters also since it's first week of may sale msde 18 sets so far ina couple of days but I know sanding will take some time snd my scraps are building rapidly i I did not rummage through scraps for these just lazy but all scrolling projects in future will first be sought after from scraps first if possible

  17. I received the pen blanks from Cousineau yesterday and had to cut some little birds. I cut a 4 little birds from the Spectraply. I received different color 20 pieces 3/4” x 3/4” x 5”, enough to make 4 birds from each piece. This makes the cost 25 cents per bird. Oh, what fun.

  18. March is a big month! Daylight Savings is March 10. Saint Patrick's Day is March 17th. March Madness also starts on March 17th. The first day of spring is March 19th. And lastly, Easter is March 31st! Whew! So instead of picking one to celebrate, we'll open it up to whatever March means to you. Is it green beer? Digging in the garden? Basketball and nachos? Or are they brightly dyed eggs? Post your March scroll saw projects here. It'll be fun to see what you come up with to celebrate March.

Your skills are so amazing. I always find myself in awe when I see one of your new projects. First time I have seen any dowels used in the making of a box. I immediately wondered about the dowels when I saw the photo of this box. It made me wonder about how you added that dark color as you did until I read you post. Interesting idea Dick heppnerguy

    Why not cardboard?

Good idea, but I'll give it a try. I use (used) USPS, UPS, and FedX boxes when I make a pattern for wood toy making. Easy to store and free.

  28. Cut from 1/2 inch cherry with the frame made out of ash . i love my scroll saw but the other tool I find really handy is my drum sander. I ran this project thru my Supermax drum sander probably about 10 times and it did not break a whisker or a blade of grass. In a honest moment I will tell you there is a couple blades of grass missing but that would be labeled scroll saw operator error

    Wood Glue Prices

Something that has always puzzled me is an employer (or Social Security) will give employees or retirees a Cost of Living allowance of 2 or 3% but the statistics show the actual cost of living went up 18 to 20%. We are actually going in the hole.

    Wood Glue Prices

Now you know why the cost of homes has gotten rediculous. Everything that goes into building a home let alone furnishing it has gone up. No end in sight. Supply and demand. This goes for shipping things as well. If you get free shipping with an order you think you won the lottery.

I never have a plan for the scraps. Sometimes I can use them for other inlays but a lot of the time they end up in the trash. It's a lot of waste for sure but I like them and they sell well.

My question how many people use their blade guards on their scroll saw? I'm asking because to me at times it is a nuisance at times when having to insert your blades thru your projects. Btw I'm using the 22 in Bauer.

  45. I have been getting a 25% off from harbor Freight because I have not been there in a while, it says "because we miss you" but only good for like 5 days, if i don't use it they send another and another every couple of weeks, RJ

  46. If you don't mind doing a little digging around online many times you can search for coupons.. I have gotten many this way.. I order quite a lot of car parts from Rockauto and they usually send out a coupon after an order.. there is a lot of folks that share that coupon on the FB car groups etc.. Always find one on there if the one they sent me had expired before i got to use it.. They can be used more than once on RA.. good until expire.. HF used to send me a monthly 25% or 30% but now they've put price limits on them most times..

    Removing patterns...

For some reason, just lately the odor of mineral spirits has been bothering me. So I switched to acetone. Dries quickly. Sometimes too quickly.

    Removing patterns...

A heat gun or a hair dryer will loosen the pattern. Be carful that you don’t scorch the wood or your fingers. Also I keep a spray bottle filled with mineral spirits. Just spritz onto the pattern. Let it soak into the paper, then you can easily peel off the pattern. Ideally, you need to learn how much adhesive to spray so the pattern stays on the wood without falling off while cutting but being able to remove the pattern when done cutting. A lot of folks will apply blue painters tape before the pattern. This allows you to easily peel the tape off with the pattern.
