Made this Piggy Bank last month and had to wait to see what color it was to be painted. Found out last week it is gonna be a boy. Also got to use my new branding iron. I bought a branding iron thru Rockler years ago, but I'll use this new iron for projects just for the Grandson. I should have used an "X" pattern for the screws holding the acrylic on instead of the "cross" pattern.. that left screw head messes with the look of the eye a little. Working on a wooden rocking horse now for him. I have it temporarily clamped together just to see what it is gonna look like. Everything is cut out and sanded, just need to paint all of the pieces and assemble... then wait about 2 years before he can actually use it!!10 points

I received a commission from my son-in-law’s sister for me to make her a piece of Intarsia as birthday gift for her husband who likes Beachy scenes, and more so, one that includes a Lighthouse. I happen to have a pattern, that was shared by Allen Barr on FB, of a slightly abstract version of a Lighthouse which she felt would be perfect. This is my interpretation of Allens Pattern. I first needed to convert his PDF of a paper print into a digital file so I could reduce his 15” diameter size and print out the pattern on one piece of 13”x 19” (Super B) paper. The final piece, including frame, is a nominal 12 ½” diameter. Wood used: Aspen, Basswood, Black Limba, Blue Pine, Monkeypod, Padauk, Spalted Maple,Wenge, Yellowheart, and Quarter Sawn White Oak for the Frame. Finish is multiple coats of rattle can spray Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish. Comments and critiques are allways welcome.5 points

I have made many things from reclaimed wood. Futons are great for this, as I get long, straight pieces.2 points

Along those lines, I have come across a some websites (i.e.; FreeCycle, Facebook, Nextdoor) that have a free section. I've see various furniture listed made with wood. My wife likes to walk the neighborhood and on occasion has made some good finds. The latest was a king size bedframe with the headboard and footboard made of creamy poplar. Also, a couple of our friends, knowing I do woodworking will call us from time to time, letting us know if someone has put something on the side of the road that I might be able to salvage for wood.2 points

Tried Steve Good's Online Name Plate Maker. Better start with a few simpler projects LOL
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to Steve Simon for a topic
I will checkout the thrift shops for used dressers; I figure the drawer sides and backs are around 1/2" and some older pieces are made of poplar and the like. I looked at Home Depot by me for poplar thin boards and a short boards, less than 3 feet long, 1/4" thick and around 5" wide was $9 in change! I can buy a whole dresser for $20 and scavenge the drawer sides and get a dozen boards... I get it's a "Learning Curve"2 points -
To start with, get something besides plywood. We all lean toward baltic birch plywood but I'll bey you are trying to use construction grade. Get some poplar and I suggest thinner than 3/4". If there is a cabinet shop near you, check with them for scraps and offcuts. As for drilling, it will be much easier to drill perpendicularly in a softer wood. Practice holding the drill as straight up and down as you can. A drill press is nice, but there will be times when you won't be able to use it, so back to the hand drill. We've all been there. It's a learning curve so just take it slow. Better wood will help a lot.2 points

Four more Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments using Spectraply for the birds
TAIrving reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Four more Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments. The first three birdhouses are made with Ash. The fourth is Cherry. All the little birds are made from Spectraply. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 and #6 Super Skip blades. Dipped in diluted Shellac two times with a light sanding with the Mac Mop between coats. Comments welcome.1 point -

Yeah too much time, . I'm currently caught up on YouTube videos.. I've watched every single uploaded youtube video they have and am patiently waiting for someone to upload another, .. My favorite channel ( sleeperdude ) usually uploads on Saturday around 1pm so I guess I'll have to settle for FB Marketplace ads for the next couple hours. On a more serious note, I built a exhaust system for my new laser and finally powered it up.. out of the box it run pretty good but mirror alignment was slightly off and I've effectively made it much worse,. I have a engraving job coming up that needs to be completed by August and at the rate I'm going with this mirror alignment thing it might be 2026 before I have it running correctly, I engraved / cut some ornaments on it the other day and even not tuned right I successfully cut 4 of them in 6 minutes and my small laser took 16 minutes to do the same ones.. I think once dialed in this thing will be awesome for where I'm going with future business. I also will say that there is a lot of YouTube time in the shop now as the machine makes my products and I either watch it do design work in the background, work on website or take a nap... I always wondered how so many etsy folks had so much time for promoting their laser / cnc products and now I know..1 point

Kris, THANK YOU for your generosity once again. I have a very good friend who served in the SeaBees on the Mekong Delta, on one of their missions, they were showered with AGENT ORANGE, and fifty years later he is being treated for several cancers in the local VA Hospital. This will brighten up his day. GOD BLESS You. Rick1 point -

Your drill guide, depending on how tight the chuck will go, is a good starting point. You may need to use scrap pieces of wood around the outside of your panel to stabilize the foot of the drill guide. Note that the drill bits, especially the tiny ones, may deflect inside the wood while drilling. I've watched #68 bits deflect before they penetrated the paper, and that's the cobalt alloy ones that I prefer.1 point
