Two Truths & A Lie:

Quote:

  1. Thank you for the mention Pete, glad i could help. I REALLY like those ornaments and the napkin snowmen. Outstanding work as always! Thanks for taking the time to post a picture for us. Russell
  2. Nice cutting Kevin. I never did have much luck cutting and selling portraits either and never really got big into it. I try to make things that are usable such as napkin holders, shelves. mirrors. and of course clocks. The Navy plaque that someone showed here by Steve Good is probably the latest pattern that had many holes that I did but turned out not too bad after all. You do get in a rhythm.
  3. At my house it was a national dipping day today. The past 2 days I have been making bases for my clocks and then sanding all clocks napkin holders and plaques getting ready for this day. Well 3 hours latter and 35 clocks with 35 bases, 5 plaques, 20 napkin holders divided by 2 because each has 2 sides and 10 bases. Dipped wiped down left to dry for about an hour outside and now all in basement where they sit for about a week. Then polished and assembled and price tag put on. I have about 5 other projects that I will continue to work on and hopefully will be done and ready for dipping end of next week. I am cutting it close so some projects may get pushed off for next year. Will see. I am still having fun creating things so on we go. Hope you all have a good day. I did.
  4. Nice job. That would make a nice fall napkin holder also
  5. Love the napkin holders, great work on all Pete. Jeff
  6. Excellent work Pete, love the turkey napkin rings. Marg
  7. nice projects. I have been thinking about cutting a collapsible bowl also but was wondering if they are big enough to be practical. What do you think, now that you have cut a couple? I really like the Thanksgiving napkin holders. Where did you find the pattern ? Those I know I would like to cut out Dick heppnerguy
  8. Made a couple of collapsible basket on using 3/4" oak and the other 1 1/8" Douglas fir, also since Thanksgiving is getting close here in Canada made some napkin holders. Also I got a few holders for the bird houses or other things. Busy in the shop.
  9. Nice work and I agree with Marg, I really like the napkin holders.
  10. Love your napkin / letter holders and Prince is terrific. Well done on all of your projects. Marg
  11. I have been looking at the napkin patterns for a long time but never cut one yet. I love Sue Mey patterns so much. She is so talented. You made her proud with the great cutting and finish work on this one Dick heppnerguy
  12. Beautiful wood you used on your Butterfly napkin holder Peter, Thank you for posting, Bob
  13. fancy napkin holder, nice cutting
  14. Probably my first complex project, Black Walnut, locally milled, base approx 3/4 " thick, took another piece from same board, hand sawed in half then Stack Cut. Finished with wipe on poly
  15. Living in coastal NC about 10 minutes from a beautiful barrier island. Ex NY 'er Enjoy several types of woodworking, which started as I saw a napkin holder one of the guys made, had to try it. Have pics somewhere, used local milled Black Walnut Enjoy fishing, Target shooting, make homemade Red Wine.
  16. You have to be specific as to what you are making. I make alot of desk clocks and are 5/8" thick to accommodate the insert. I make shelves napkin holders, plaques all from 3/4" oak. I make mirrors from 3/4". I use all sizes and thickness depending on the project. No set dimensions.
  17. Yes Jim. There is usually always a thick part of a pattern where you can do this. I have done this with all my clocks and never had one break except when dropped and then as I said easier fix. I use countersink drills for the size screws I use. I mainly use wood screws--#6 or #8 --3/4" to 1" long have worked well. When I make napkin holders I use dry wall screws. https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTAwM1gxMDAz/z/OiIAAOSwav5ashA0/$_35.JPG?set_id=880000500F I drill the base using those bits and then use a smaller machine bit to drill the clock portion so that when screwing the screws in it does not crack the wood and is easier to screw in. Have to make sure you do not drill too deep so the bits pokes out. I center the top portion on the base and where the holes are in the base I make a witness mark on the clock. I make a center mark and drill one hole. I then place clock on base and screw it down. I center the clock on the base and then and only then drill the second hole. This ensures that the holes match up. Have no idea what Kevin is talking about weakening the clock. I have done this for many years and has worked well and have made a ton of clocks. I make clocks that may also have felt on the base so gluing the clock to the felt is a no go such as the gamblers clock I show here. The only clocks I could not screw down was the Queen Ann clocks(last photo). There I used dowels in the corners because I did not trust just glue to hold. The pieces were too thin and the grain was too many different directions.
  18. If you reduced that size, they would make awesome napkin rings.
  19. Monroe Dutcher Basket I recently received the two Monroe Dutcher basket books that I had post I was looking for from Scrappile as he was very generous to send them to me, he stated he felt he would not get to making them and wanted someone to use them. He also stated that another person on another wood working site was looking for one of the designs as well. He asked that if he sent them to me if I could please send a copy of the napkin basket to the other woodworker that was looking for them as well. I told him I would be more than happy to. Well he made one and so did I. This was my first attempt to make one of these kinds of baskets. https://www.google.com/url?q=http://lumberjocks.com/projects/371961&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwiTq-WG-bDaAhWo7YMKHWu9B8oQFggKMAM&client=internal-uds-cse&cx=017914489645407774653:gwwk-zif3wk&usg=AOvVaw3FloTpqAejw-iIzGBSUqTd Thanks again Scrappile
  20. Napkin rings made from 1/2 inch poplar and painted with acrylic paint.
  21. Easter is on April 1st this year. So you have plenty of time to prepare for the holiday. This challenge is open to interpretation. Just do something for Easter. This could be: Toys for the Kids Easter Baskets Candy holders Easter decor Bunnies...bunnies...and more bunnies. Bowls, place settings, napkin rings, centerpieces, etc for Easter Dinner Religious/Faith based projects Good Friday related It's up to you. This is your chance to be creative and make something for Easter. Post a pic or your Easter project here. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
  22. Ray you know I do because we have talked before. I do not use it that often any more but still in my arsenal. I do have it set up to make angle cuts that I use for my napkin holders and was using for my collapsible baskets that I use make many of. Other than that it sits and collects dust but not from sawing. It is an older unit and is 18" . I use a foot switch as I do on all my saws. I put a wood top on it for zero clearance and smooth sliding of work piece. Not much more I can say about it.
  23. Hello Bob

I just posted a question regarding one of your beautiful patterns after I seen Fish post a walnut plaque. It is called Celtic Shamrock patterns I love this pattern and was wondering is it possible to take those 2 patterns and make napkin holder patterns from them. I have some Irish friends who love stuff like this. Thanks.

  24. hello Fish I just saw your Celtic Shamrock walnut plaque and love this. Is this a pattern here or one you can share??  Would love to have that made into a napkin holder pattern too. I have Irish friends that just love things like this. Thanks.
